About:
Summit Search Group has partnered with Bockstael Construction Limited on the search for their next Manager, Health and Safety. Bockstael Construction Limited is a leading Construction Manager, Design Builder and General Contractor serving institutional, commercial, multi-family residential and industrial clients. For more than 114 years, their success has been built on the strength of our people, continuous improvement and a commitment to doing work the right way.
The Position:
We are looking for an experienced construction safety professional who is ready to lead people, influence operations and help build the next stage of Bockstael’s safety management system. This is not a role focused only on compliance, it is an opportunity to understand how work is actually performed, identify where our systems can be stronger and turn that understanding into practical improvements that protect people.
Reporting to the Director of Field Operations, the Manager, Health & Safety works closely with field leaders, project teams and senior leadership. The role leads and develops the Safety Team and helps ensure safety is integrated into planning, decision-making and execution across the company.
Key Responsibilities:
· Build, maintain and continuously improve Bockstael’s health and safety management system, including the COR program, annual safety cycle, policies, procedures and supporting resources.
· Lead, coach and develop the Safety Team by setting clear priorities, creating consistent expectations and building accountability for field support and results.
· Work with Superintendents, Project Managers and company leaders to integrate safety into estimating, project start-up, planning, execution and closeout.
· Maintain a regular field presence to understand how work is performed, build relationships and determine whether programs and controls are effective in practice.
· Identify recurring and systemic risks, recommend practical improvements and work with the Director of Field Operations to ensure changes fit Bockstael’s operations and are successfully implemented.
· Use leading and lagging indicators, observations, worker feedback and operational information to establish priorities and measure whether improvements are working.
· Lead fair, learning-focused incident investigations that identify contributing conditions and systemic improvements. Ensure corrective actions are completed and verified for effectiveness.
· Ensure effective training and competency systems are in place for employees, field leaders and the Safety Team.
· Support project teams with project-specific safety plans, hazard assessments, safe work procedures, emergency planning and other risk-control requirements.
· Establish clear expectations for subcontractor safety planning and performance, and support project teams in addressing gaps.
· Stay current with legislation, COR requirements and industry practices, and translate them into clear, useful direction for the organization.
Qualifications:
· Progressive health and safety experience in construction or another complex, field-based operating environment.
· Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives, improve systems and influence operational leaders.
· Experience leading and developing people is preferred. Candidates with strong leadership potential demonstrated through mentoring, project leadership and organizational influence will also be considered.
· Post-secondary education in occupational health and safety or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
· NCSO, CRSP, CHSC or a comparable professional designation is preferred.
· Experience with COR program management and audit requirements is preferred.
· Strong judgment and the ability to balance regulatory requirements, risk and practical execution.
· Clear written and verbal communication, strong listening skills and the ability to build credibility with workers, field leaders and executives.
· Comfort using data and technology to identify trends, set priorities and measure performance.
· The curiosity and self-awareness to seek input, challenge existing practices constructively and adjust based on results.
What success looks like
· Safety systems are practical, understood and consistently used in the field.
· The Safety Team is aligned, capable, and responsive.
· Field and project leaders take ownership of safety as part of how work is planned and managed.
· Learning from incidents, observations and everyday work leads to visible company-wide improvement.
· People at every level feel heard, supported and accountable for protecting themselves and others.
