Senior Backend Engineer
Amsterdam, NH
Apply for this job

Our partner is modernizing decades-old infrastructure in the traditional capital markets by bringing together the brightest minds in engineering and finance. Their two teams, based in Amsterdam and New York, work hand in hand to build, enhance, and operate an SEC Registered Alternative Trading System (ATS) for the $8TN+ Securities Finance Market that underpins the global financial system.

Their cloud-native platform has been built entirely in-house from scratch to enhance and replace old technology stacks composed of disparate, costly, and inefficient systems. They work closely with the largest clearing house in the world, the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (the DTCC), and some of the most prominent financial institutions across the globe. Their mission is to correct a long broken market structure by providing a neutral, value-driven, full-scope offering to market participants with varying needs and requirements. Their pragmatic approach to engineering is at the heart of what they do, and they maintain the highest standards of integrity, quality of work, and transparency in all that they do. They are a small, but growing team looking for hard-working, prideful, and kind individuals to help them drive their mission forward.

Behind all of this sits novel technology backed by research in the field of cryptography - and it’s not blockchain! Their long term vision is that with a foundation built on core infrastructure, and a reputation built on trust, they can shepherd solutions to some of the financial worlds’ largest problems through their expertise in Secure Multi-Party Computation (MPC). But first, they need to succeed in the enormous opportunity in front of them in Securities Finance...

The Position

Their system architecture contains multiple components to serve the needs of a highly complex and complicated sector of the capital markets. Securities Lending workflows that are managed by their system rely on a combination of pre-trade, trade matching, ongoing life cycle management, reporting, and multiple layers and endpoints of connectivity. They have built a robust UI that sits atop all of this, along with an API layer used for direct server-to-server integration. You will work closely with their entire engineering and business teams, pushing forward internal and external infrastructure needs. To achieve this, you are someone passionate about delivering a high-quality experience to customers and anticipating the demands of a rapidly scaling and highly complex ecosystem.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of broader experience, ideally in a startup that went through a rapid growth period and supported a large and diversified user base
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Product, Engineering, and Business team members
  • Own and drive backend projects from inception to implementation
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and follow-through; appreciation for well-designed, simple, maintainable systems
  • Team player with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and desire to attack problems in real-time
  • They are building systems that run in environments with very little tolerance for error and maintain high SLAs, so you'd do well with a perfectionist streak, but not to an impractical extent. Perfect is the enemy of good.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the financial services industry, with a focus on institutional trading applications is a plus, but not a necessity
  • You care… deeply… about the work you are doing equally among the most mundane or most enjoyable tasks

Nice to have

  • Experience with Go
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud and/or Kubernetes
  • Experience with distributed systems and async communication
  • Experience with capital markets infrastructure including exchanges, trading venues, clearance, and settlement ecosystems
  • Understanding of equity, fixed income, and derivatives products and trading strategies
  • Understanding of financing markets and underlying workflows
  • Understanding of execution systems and related components such as smart order routers and algorithmic trading products
  • Experience in a Startup environment
  • Have worked in environments that:
  • Heavily interact with databases and message queues
  • Have strict availability requirements
  • and/or have a lot of connectivity with external partners/customers

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation: depending on education/work experience.
  • Vacation days: 25 days of holiday per year based on full-time employment.
  • Working hours: they operate on a hybrid basis currently, with 2 days with everyone in the office, 1 day optional, and 2 days where most people are working from home. They believe that in-person, real-time collaboration is the best form of communication, but understand that everyone works differently. Due to the serious nature and location of their existing commercial business, they rely on common sense, over-communication, and flexibility from their teams across regions in managing their time to ensure the customers come first.
