VP Of Philanthropy

Position Summary 

SN is proud to support United Way of York County (UWYC) in their search for a Vice President of Philanthropy. UWYC is seeking a visionary and collaborative leader to guide their Resource Development team and shape the strategic direction of all fundraising efforts. This role oversees initiatives including major gifts, planned and legacy giving, grants, and corporate partnerships. The ideal candidate is passionate about community empowerment and committed to driving meaningful impact through ambitious financial and philanthropic goals.  


With a visionary approach and a deep commitment to relationship-based philanthropy, individual will inspire a culture of generosity across the organization and community. By cultivating strategic alliances and championing innovative fundraising strategies, this role ensures the long-term financial strength, sustainability, and mission advancement of UWYC.


Essential Functions

Core Role

  • Lead all major gifts strategies, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of five- and six-figure donors.
  • Oversee the entire Resource Development team, fostering collaboration and performance excellence.
  • Oversee the integration and alignment of all resource development processes including but not limited to: workplace campaign, grants, sponsorships, legacy giving, affinity groups, and direct giving to maximize revenues and create efficiencies 
  • Lead the grant application process and strategy, securing significant gifts from regional and national private and corporate foundations.
  • Direct the growth and engagement of the Tocqueville Society and 1921 Legacy Circle.
  • Develop and implement a planned and legacy giving program to secure bequests and endowment gifts from key donors.
  • Provide strategic vision for the growth of all resource development activities.

  • Demonstrate the organization's commitment to the community through leading by example and participating in community events where appropriate.  
  • Model professional and ethical donor engagement, ensuring best practices in stewardship.
  • Align fundraising strategies with organizational mission and community impact priorities.


Leadership/Management

  • Coach and mentor staff, promoting a culture of accountability and innovation.
  • Help the team perform at their highest level possible by removing any barriers or challenges. Lead the performance review process for department. 
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to learn during change initiatives. Ability to lead others through change initiatives.
  • Help develop and implement strategic plan initiatives.  
  • Embrace continuous learning and help mentor/coach employees.
  • Provide leadership to the team to use data in decision making.


Financial Acumen

  • Lead the budget process for the department, and alert Executive Leadership if an unexpected item happens and could negatively impact the budget. 
  • Review and analyze department specific reporting.


Educational and Other Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in philanthropy, major gifts, or foundation relations.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (CFRE preferred).
  • Proven success, securing significant gifts and leading donor-focused teams.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Provide vision and leadership for the Resource Development division.
  • Provide guidance to the team to develop their ability to think critically.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and organizations. 
  • Demonstrated reliability and positive work habits. 
  • Capable of multi-tasking and working under pressure. 
  • Ability to pass background checks in accordance with insurance provider and legal requirements.
  • Proficient at using Microsoft Suite, and the ability to learn organization specific software.

For 100 years, United Way of York County has worked in the York County community to improve people’s lives. They began as The York Welfare Federation, an organization that raised funds on behalf of 17 member agencies. Today, as United Way of York County, the mission of raising community funds remains the same, but the strategies have evolved in order to meet the growing and changing needs of people living in York County.
