Head of Biologics
Location: Maryland, USA (onsite)
Our client is seeking an accomplished Head of Biologics to oversee discovery-stage and preclinical biologics research. This leader will shape the scientific and discovery strategy, manage programs, and guide a high-performing team. Success in the role requires strong leadership, the ability to thrive in a cross-functional environment, and an entrepreneurial approach. The position will work closely with the executive leadership team and serve as a critical liaison with external collaborators.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with executive management to provide strategic direction for biologics R&D, driving current pipeline programs forward and expanding the company’s future portfolio.
- Lead large-molecule discovery initiatives from hit identification through candidate selection and validation, supporting IND, BLA, and NDA submissions.
- Enhance internal capabilities by adopting advanced technologies to deliver first-in-class or best-in-class therapeutic antibodies and biologics.
- Build, mentor, and inspire a team of scientists to advance biologics discovery and development.
- Provide scientific oversight and guidance to internal teams and external collaborators, including experimental design, in vitro assay development (biophysical, biochemical, and cell-based), and in vivo studies.
- Review, analyze, and interpret experimental results, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure high-quality decision-making across drug discovery programs.
- Oversee project planning, budgets, and timelines, delivering progress reports to executive leadership.
Qualifications & Experience
- Ph.D. in biochemistry, pharmacology, cell biology, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in biotech or pharma (including postdoctoral and fellowship training).
- Broad knowledge and hands-on experience in early drug discovery and preclinical development.
- Proven track record leading antibody/large-molecule discovery programs.
- Expertise in identifying novel therapeutic targets across multiple disease areas, evaluating biological rationale, tractability, and competitive landscape.
- Strong background in establishing biochemical/biophysical and cell-based assays, along with experience in translational models.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting, developing, and leading scientific teams within a matrixed R&D environment.
- Exceptional leadership, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple programs and engage effectively with stakeholders.
- Experience/authorship of regulatory documentation & submissions
