East Harlem, NY
Apply for this job

Lead Your Own Histology Lab Team in the Heart of NYC đź—˝

Location: East Harlem, NY

Role: Histotechnologist – Level V (Supervisor)

Requirement: Active NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Certified Histological Technician License

Summary:

Are you a licensed Histotechnologist ready to step into a high-impact leadership role? Metropolitan is looking for a Level V Supervisor to oversee our histology personnel and ensure the highest standards of tissue processing and slide quality. If you thrive on mentoring teams, troubleshooting complex staining platforms, and driving quality in a mission-driven anatomic pathology environment, this is your next career move.

The Advantages of this Opportunity:

  • Step into Leadership: Move beyond the microtome. As a Level V, you aren’t just a tech; you are a mentor, supervisor, and the "go-to" tissue expert for a talented team of histotechs and lab assistants.
  • Drive Clinical Excellence: You take ownership of the histology lab’s integrity—overseeing QC, tissue processor and autostainer performance, and remedial actions to ensure every slide delivered to the pathologist is gold-standard.
  • Professional Growth: With direct involvement in training and proficiency assessments for microtomy, embedding, and complex staining (IHC/Special Stains), you’ll be shaping the future of anatomic pathology at a premier NYC facility.
  • Mission-Driven Culture: Join a facility that prioritizes the ICARE model (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence), where your work directly supports the community of East Harlem.

Day-to-Day:

  • Supervise & Mentor: Manage daily histology workflow—from grossing and embedding to microtomy and slide distribution—train staff, and ensure your team is proficient and confident.
  • Technical Oversight: Monitor performance specifications for microtomes, embedding centers, and automated IHC/H&E stainers. Initiate preventive maintenance and troubleshoot any tissue processing non-conformances.
  • Quality Assurance: Act as the final gatekeeper for slide quality, minimizing artifacts, ensuring stain consistency, and verifying that patient samples are impeccably tracked and prepared.
  • Compliance Leadership: Keep the histology lab audit-ready by ensuring full compliance with SOPs, chemical hygiene plans (formalin/xylene safety), and CAP/CLIA regulatory standards.

Required Skills:

  • Credentials: A Bachelor’s Degree in Histotechnology, Clinical Lab Science, or a related field, alongside a valid NYS License (Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Certified Histological Technician).
  • Expertise: Deep knowledge of anatomic pathology operations, routine and special stains, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), laboratory information systems (LIS), and strict biosafety protocols.
  • Leadership Style: A "coach" mentality—the ability to develop others, manage high-volume surgical pathology workflows, and thrive under pressure.
  • Certification (Preferred): ASCP certification (HTL or HT) is highly regarded.
