About the Position

Mushuau Innu First Nation is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our Health Services Department as a Registered Nurse specializing in Psychiatric or Mental Health. As a Registered Nurse specializing in Psychiatric or Mental Health provides care for patients with mental health and substance use conditions, supporting both medical and emotional needs. This role requires a balance of clinical expertise in nursing and a deep understanding of mental health, with responsibilities for assessing, planning, and implementing patient-centered care in collaboration with a healthcare team.


This position is a rotational role that requires extended stays in the community of Natuashish. Travel and accommodations will be provided by Mushuau Innu First Nation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of patients' mental and physical health, identifying changes and coordinating adjustments in care plans.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and update treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions, administer medications, monitor for side effects, and offer support to patients and their families regarding mental health education.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations, providing interventions to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Assist patients in developing life skills, coping strategies, and accessing community resources for ongoing mental health support
  • Provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing care as outlined in the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador Standards of Nursing Practice and Guidelines for Ethical Behaviour.
  • Respond decisively and quickly to patient needs or risks by observing, monitoring, and processing information as well as the changing health status of patients.
  • Practice to the full scope of practice of a Registered Nurse within the appropriate level of competence.
  • Document accurate reports for data collection, interpretation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care in accordance with the ARNNL Documentation Standard and Mushuau Innu First Nation’s policy standards.
  • Share new evidence-based information on patient care practices with the nursing and multidisciplinary team.
  • Educate patients and families in consultation with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Act as an advocate to protect and promote patients' rights to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and access to information.
  • Comply with, enforce, and educate on all health and safety policies and practices within the workplace.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to interact empathetically with patients and their families.
  • In-depth understanding of mental health conditions, treatment modalities, and medication management.
  • Ability to handle acute psychiatric crises, ensuring effective de-escalation and safety protocols.
  • Capable of managing the emotional and physical demands of mental health nursing in complex environments.
  • Strong knowledge of the Privacy Impact Act, PHIA Legislation, and Privacy Health Officer Information Act.
  • Knowledge of First Nation health systems including FNHA health and wellness programs and best practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of updated nursing best practices and patient care.
  •  Awareness of Indigenous cultural safety training, anti-racist practice, and trauma-informed care.
  • Strong organizational and coordination abilities.
  • Fluency in English is required, and additional proficiency in Indigenous languages would be an asset.
  • Experience in advocacy and promoting patient rights within the healthcare system is desirable.
  • Proficiency with computers and computer systems including EMR and the Client Referral and Management System (CRMS).


Experience and Education Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited program with additional specialization in psychiatric or mental health nursing.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a mental health setting such as acute psychiatric units, addiction recovery programs, or community mental health teams.
  • Current Registration with the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL).
