Chaloner has partnered with the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA) on their search for a Deputy Director, Policy and Advocacy Communications.


Position Overview

This Washington, DC based role is part of the Corporate Communications team at the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA), a business association that represents the largest energy buyers in the world.


A successful Deputy Director will play a crucial role in advancing the organization’s mission of low-cost, affordable, carbon emissions free grids by developing and implementing effective communication strategies to support federal, regional, and international clean energy advocacy efforts. As a proactive leader with strong strategic and project management skills, the Deputy Director is responsible for making communications a robust element of all policy and advocacy priorities across the organization.


The role will be the lead writer on the Corporate Communications team and candidates must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills.


Core Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute clear, persuasive policy communications to support CEBA’s strategic priorities and to influence key policy, regulatory, and global decision-makers
  • Work collaboratively and constructively with the US and Global policy teams to provide direction and develop messaging. Create storytelling opportunities and draft talking points. Write speeches and remarks to advance CEBA’s position with decision-makers and influencers and enhance credibility and visibility across media outlets and industry events
  • Work collaboratively to develop, manage, edit, and position CEBA thought leadership and market insights
  • Identify, vet, develop, and execute external engagements and opportunities, including conferences, panels, and seminars; build out session proposals and develop talking points and messaging
  • Build long-term relationships with key press members, assist in managing daily responses to media inquiries, develop media engagement materials, and help position CEBA executives and senior leaders as thought leaders featured in media interviews
  • Work with CEBA members and their policy teams to leverage members’ impact to advance CEBA’s vision
  • Create supporting materials including talking points, testimony, statements, and a library of organizational and contextual position papers 
  • Direct and help manage external communications experts and consultants
  • Motivate and mentor the team, ensuring they are set up for success and are successful in their roles
  • Provide insights to help inform CEBA’s thought leadership and development efforts
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Supervisory responsibilities

This role does not have any supervisory responsibilities currently, but as the team grows the Deputy Director will be expected to lead and develop a team

 

Qualifications:

 

Required:

  • 15+ years’ experience if no higher education
  • 10+ years’ experience and bachelor’s degree
  • 6+ years’ experience and master’s degree

 

Additional:

  • Strong understanding of energy policy and general knowledge of the legislative process
  • Strategic communications, marketing, or public relations experience, preferably in a trade association, agency, clean energy company or organization, or corporate environment
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver impactful communications campaigns, including revenue generation and brand building
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills with the ability to lead development of bold narratives complementing organizational messaging
  • Strong project management skills, including ability to manage multiple projects with varied timelines
  • Self-motivated and dynamic workstyle

Role Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Communicate verbally and in written form with great facility and must be able to be understood
  • Be present in the DC office according to CEBA’s return to work policy

The compensation range for this role is $135,000 to $155,000 plus a generous discretionary bonus package up to 20% of base salary. CEBA strives for salary equity based on the job, and the candidate’s experience, skills, education, and (once hired) performance at CEBA—not based on a candidate’s negotiation skills, gender, race, sexual orientation, or any other non-skills-based attributes.
