JOB POSTING:

Title: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Location: Billings, Montana Area

Are you a strategic financial leader ready to guide the future of a legacy agricultural enterprise?

Do you possess the ability to be a key advisor to the CEO through managerial accounting and data-driven decisions?

Are you looking for a role where you can oversee the financial health of diverse entities—from a sprawling ranch operation to a massive commercial feedyard to high-tech, renewable agricultural solutions?

Are you ready to partner with a fifth-generation ranching family to professionalize financial systems and scale a vertically integrated business?

Our client is a diversified, fifth-generation agricultural enterprise committed to innovation, vertical integration, and sustainability. The operation is headquartered near Billings, Montana, the overall enterprise includes a large commercial feedlot, a legacy cow-calf operation, along with other extensive farming assets.

This is a vibrant operation; a business linking high-quality Montana genetics directly to national branded beef supply chains. This focus is designed for sustainable growth and a secure future for generations to come. The company's dedication has led to the successful development of processes and systems that consistently achieve measurably excellent results.

Why is this beneficial to you?:

You are not just working a job at a ranch; you are taking the financial reins of a high-performing and diversified agricultural enterprise led by one of the industry's most forward-thinking executives. This is a rare chance to work alongside a leader who combines deep tradition with high-level corporate strategy and data-driven management, offering the CFO a front-row seat to modern, progressive ranching.

This is a career-defining opportunity to serve as the strategic financial architect and capital strategist for a vertically integrated powerhouse. This role offers the autonomy to move the organization from historical reporting to forward-looking managerial accounting while guiding the capital stack for upward scalability. The CFO will be connected to the land and the people, ensuring they aren't just looking at spreadsheets but understanding the real assets behind the numbers.

Based in the scenic Billings, MT area, you get the best of both worlds: the authentic, rural ranching lifestyle on the Yellowstone River with access to city amenities, airports, and world-class recreation (skiing at Big Sky, hunting, fishing, 3 hours to Yellowstone National Park) within a short drive. Visit Think Billings to learn more.

The Chief Financial Officer isn't walking into a turnaround disaster; they are being handed the keys to a functional, successful, and storied machine with big plans for continued growth.

If you are a seasoned CFO who can lead and expand upon an already impressive legacy, this could be your next role.

CULTURE:

You are entering a high-stakes, high-trust environment. The culture will require you to possess the grit to handle the financial realities of ranch life while simultaneously possessing the intellectual agility to build complex financial models for renewable energy and vertical integration. It is a culture that respects "boots on the ground" reality over corporate theory, but it is aggressively seeking a partner to help it scale into a modern agricultural powerhouse.

THE ROLE:

Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

The CFO is a high-level leadership role responsible for the financial health, strategy, and administrative operations of all business units. A position that represents a true strategic partnership with the President. Unlike a traditional role focused solely on historical reporting, the CFO must champion managerial accounting - establishing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and implementing systems that reward performance and drive future decisions.

You will manage the company's capital stack, oversee complex loan portfolios, and ensure accurate financial reporting across the Feedyard, Ranch, Farming, and other divisions. This is a hands-on leadership role based on-site as well as remote work from home. You will work directly with ownership to structure financial operations for diverse businesses ranging from traditional ranching to high-tech renewable agriculture.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strategic Financial Leadership: Oversee financial activities for all diversified enterprises. Manage the business loan portfolio, borrowing bases, and banking relationships.
  • Managerial Accounting: Move beyond simple tax compliance to provide deep financial analysis, focusing on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • KPI Development: Collaborate with the CEO to develop and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and measurements for company performance across all units.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare consolidated and entity-specific financial reports (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow) in accordance with GAAP.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise administrative and accounting staff. The CFO has the authority to hire additional support staff as needed to build a robust financial department.
  • Systems Oversight: Maintain and refine the use of QuickBooks and proprietary industry software (such as Animal Management Studio) to ensure data accuracy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business required. A CPA designation or MBA is preferred but not required if the candidate possesses extensive relevant experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of high-level financial accounting experience.
  • Agricultural Acumen: Strong preference for candidates with backgrounds in Agribusiness, Ag Lending, or the Cattle Industry. Understanding the nuances of livestock borrowing bases, biological assets, and multi-entity books is essential.
  • Strategic Mindset: Ability to handle complex loan portfolios and transition between detailed reporting and high-level strategy.
  • Cultural and Locational Fit: Must be an "innovative and servant leader" who is comfortable working on-site in a traditional ranching environment. The workplace will be a mixture of work from home and on-site at various locations important to the business. Long periods of sitting along with the ability to lift up to 20 pounds from time to time.
  • Software Proficiency: Microsoft Office, Quickbooks and the ability to learn proprietary software.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Salary: Competitive Base Salary, commensurate with experience.
  • Performance Bonus: Annual performance bonus: target of 10% – 20%+
  • Paid Time Off & Major Holidays
