Description
We are seeking a hardworking and reliable Metal Laborer to join the team at a Tualatin metal recycling facility. This position supports daily operations within a metal processing and recycling environment, assisting with sorting, material handling, customer interaction, and maintaining a safe and organized yard.
This is a hands-on, fast-paced role that requires attention to detail, safety awareness, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an outdoor/warehouse setting and is willing to learn about metal types, processing methods, and facility operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in sorting and processing ferrous and non-ferrous metals
- Learn to identify different metal grades and materials
- Operate equipment safely, including forklifts and material handling tools
- Remove contaminants and non-metal materials from scrap piles
- Direct incoming traffic to ensure safe and efficient yard flow
- Maintain cleanliness by sweeping and removing debris such as nails and screws
- Assist with building and breaking down gaylord boxes and storage containers
- Support customers in the public depot and buyback area
- Assist metal buyers by helping load/unload materials from scales quickly and efficiently
- Maintain organization around the scale and sorting areas
- Move materials throughout the facility using a forklift or manual handling
- Use hand tools and power tools for various tasks as needed
- Monitor equipment and report any malfunctions or safety concerns
- Participate in monthly safety meetings
- Perform daily inspections to ensure the facility remains clean, safe, and organized
- Provide professional and courteous customer service
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management
Qualifications & Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift safely
- Strong ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to remain composed and productive under pressure
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Strong communication skills
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and development
- Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
Preferred Backgrounds
- Experience in recycling, scrap metal, warehouse, or yard operations
- Experience working in outdoor or industrial environments
- Forklift or material handling experience
- Customer-facing roles in industrial or service environments
Work Environment
- Combination of outdoor yard and warehouse setting
- Exposure to weather conditions, noise, and industrial materials
- Physically active role involving constant movement and manual labor
- Team-oriented environment focused on safety and efficiency
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 49 lbs unassisted
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, and lifting
- Ability to push, pull, and handle materials regularly
- Comfortable performing repetitive physical tasks
- Ability to safely operate equipment and tools
- Must be able to drive a vehicle if required
