NYC: Product Designer(s) @ well-known Benefits / Payroll tech firm helping SMBs

Location: hybrid, 2–3 days/week onsite in NYC (FiDi – with sweeping bay views!)

Comp: $127–156K USD base salary + options

Visas: Sorry, no visa sponsorship or transfers available

Our client – a thriving, established Benefits/Payroll tech company focused on empowering SMBs – is hiring 4 Product Designers who demonstrate both strong UX and visual UI design craft. You’ll join a team of 30+ Product Designers, with opportunities for both autonomy and mentorship. The VP of Design is one of our absolute favorites - he’s highly respected for building supportive, high-impact teams and bringing a thoughtful philosophy to experience design.

About the Company:

Chances are, if you've worked for a startup or an established small-to-medium-sized business, you're probably already familiar with our client!

They're a late-stage Benefits / Payroll platform tech company (Series E, pre-IPO) in an exciting stage of substantial but responsible growth, and with great name recognition. They provide SMBs - including many in the tech industry - high-quality, enterprise-level health insurance and payroll tools that smaller businesses and their employees wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

They’re known for a standout culture rooted in honesty, openness, integrity, friendliness, no-ego, and inclusion – “collaboration” isn’t just a word on a cheesy poster in a hallway – it represents their values at their core.

Their cred:

Fortune magazine named them to their Best Workplaces in New York list 5 times, and they’re also on BuiltIn’s list of “NYC Best Large Companies to Work For".

They’ve been in business for 10+ years and are an important player in the $40B HR Tech industry. They’re secured $160M in funding from many top VCs including Bain, Thrive, FirstMark Capital, and Union Square Ventures.

Their star continues to rise rapidly; it’s a great time to get in the door! They recently expanded into global markets and have grown consistently and intelligently year over year.

They’re currently at ~1300 total employees, with 30+ Product Designer and Content Designers, and have doubled their Product org in the last 2 years. They’re now adding a full suite of products to their already well-known core product, so they’re in a great place for continued growth and visibility.

What’s happening there in Design:

They brought in their first-ever VP Experience Design last year who we’ve known for years and absolutely trust. His arrival there is a great signal for the company’s serious investment in Design and respect for the discipline, and he’s successfully raised its visibility and influence throughout the org.

We’ve helped this VP grow his teams through the years and have seen firsthand how his design teams adore and trust him. He’s empathic, strategic, supersmart, and a thought leader in the space. Plus, he’s got a great sense of humor – which makes for a super enjoyable work vibe!

They’re seeking fulltime Product Designers:

You may notice that we’re not going into great detail into what team you’ll be working on - this is by design! They are looking to hire 4 full-stack Product Designers, and the beauty of this is they want to match the right people with the right team. So based on your skills and talents, you'll be matched to the best team to most effectively set you up for longterm success.

As a Product Designer, you’ll be able to receive mentorship and guidance from skilled leadership, while working quickly and autonomously to see your products through to launch.

What you’ll get to do in this role:

  • Design across the product development lifecycle, from discovery to launch (and post-launch iteration!)
  • Collaborate closely cross-functionally with other designers, product managers, researchers, marketers, data scientists, and engineers, to identify and define design problems
  • Utilize user research, testing, and data analysis to understand user behavior and inform design decisions
  • Validate design decisions through rapid prototyping and experimentation
  • Contribute to the internal design system with consistency and efficiency in mind
  • And more exciting work as it crops up!

The ideal candidate has:

  • 3-5+ years of relevant Product Design experience
  • B2B experience with complex, content-rich interfaces preferably within HR Tech / benefits / payroll, EdTech, or FinTech – but flexible!
  • Equal comfort with UX + UI Design, as well as the ability to conduct UX Research and talk to users directly
  • A portfolio of multiple, relevant projects that have launched – with success metrics to show the results
  • The ability to think in large systems and analyze complex workflows; information architecture skills
  • Obsession with visual design craft and a meticulous eye for detail (ie: typography, hierarchy, etc)
  • Experience creating consistency across multiple disparate products, and working with a very high volume of content
  • Ideally, your case studies show results / impact / success metrics of your work, for both the business AND the end user.
  • Team oriented, with the instinct to share “early and often”, holding nothing too precious
  • Also a plus: experience designing tools and platforms for SMBs, experience working in a highly matrixed design org

Salary: 127-156K USD base annually + plus options + benefits (including flexible PTO!)
