Engineering Project Manager - Commercial

Compensation: $95-125K per year

Job Type: Full-Time

New York State Solar is seeking a skilled and highly experienced Engineering Project Manager for Commercial Solar to join our growing team.

The Engineering Project Manager will oversee the full lifecycle of complex commercial solar projects, typically ranging from 200 kW to 5+ megawatts. This role requires a highly organized and technically knowledgeable professional with strong experience in solar project execution, engineering coordination, and cross-departmental collaboration.


The Engineering Project Manager will be responsible for ensuring commercial solar projects progress efficiently from design through construction and final commissioning. This position will involve close collaboration with internal teams, including engineering, interconnection, permitting, scheduling, and construction, as well as external stakeholders such as utilities, subcontractors, and clients.

This role will also provide leadership to a team of Project Coordinators responsible for assisting with project tracking, documentation, and operational support across the commercial project pipeline.


Duties & Responsibilities:

As an Engineering Project Manager of Commercial Solar, you will:

● Oversee commercial solar projects from planning through completion, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards

● Manage complex commercial solar projects ranging from several hundred kilowatts to multi-megawatt installations

● Review and interpret engineering plan sets, electrical diagrams, and solar system design documentation to ensure project feasibility and alignment with project scope

● Develop and maintain project timelines, budgets, and operational tracking systems to monitor projectprogress across multiple departments

● Provide direct leadership and management to a team of Project Coordinators, including task delegation,milestone tracking, and performance oversight

● Hire, onboard, train, and mentor team members while supporting professional development and operational consistency

● Collaborate closely with internal teams, including Engineering, Interconnection, Permitting, Scheduling, Customer Service, and Escalations, to ensure project alignment and smooth workflow

● Coordinate with utilities and relevant stakeholders to support interconnection submissions, CESIR studies, and utility application processes

● Support and oversee commercial permitting processes, including working with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and ensuring required documentation is properly submitted and tracked

● Maintain clear and consistent communication with project stakeholders, including engineers, installers, subcontractors, and clients

● Monitor project performance through key performance indicators, including:

○ On-time project completion

○ Budget adherence

○ Customer satisfaction and feedback

○ Scope change management

○ Timely issue identification and resolution

● Support subcontractor management, including oversight of invoicing, documentation, and payment coordination

● Lead project closeout activities, including project acceptance documentation, compliance reporting, and operational handoff

● Identify operational inefficiencies and implement process improvements and scalable project management systems to enhance project delivery

● Perform additional ad hoc responsibilities as required to support departmental and organizational goals


Job Requirements:

● Bachelor’s degree or Certification in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, Project Management, or a related field

● 5+ years of experience managing solar energy or technical construction projects, with strong preference for commercial solar or large-scale installations

● Demonstrated experience managing complex solar projects ranging from several hundred kilowatts to multi-megawatt systems

● Strong understanding of solar energy systems, commercial PV design, and project execution workflows

● Ability to review and interpret engineering plan sets and electrical diagrams

● Experience coordinating with utilities and managing interconnection processes

● Familiarity with CESIR studies, utility applications, and interconnection documentation is stronglypreferred

● Knowledge of commercial solar permitting processes and working with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) is a strong plus

● Proven ability to lead and manage teams, including Project Coordinators or technical project staff

● Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills

● Experience with project management and CRM software (e.g., Salesforce, Zoho, Smartsheet, Procore, or similar systems)

● PMP certification or similar project management certification is a plus
