Title: Controller
Location: Gaithersburg, MD (Hybrid).
Type: Full-time
A clinical-stage biotech company is seeking a Controller to oversee all Finance and Accounting functions. Reporting to the CFO, this role will lead financial operations, ensure compliance, and build scalable systems to support company growth. Ideal candidates bring strong technical accounting skills, a CPA, and experience in early-stage biotech or high-growth environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and optimize all accounting functions: AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and financial reporting
- Drive monthly close across all divisions, identifying and implementing process improvements
- Prepares financial statements to summarize and forecast the company’s financial status, including monthly, quarterly, and yearly close process and analysis
- Perform a detailed balance sheet review, managing current and future commitments
- Coordinate and assist with the annual budget and reforecasting processes
- Actively assess and monitor the control environment and where required, implement appropriate internal controls
- Manage the structure of Chart of Accounts across all entities
- Drive system implementations, enhancements and controllership projects, including account reconciliation, operational reporting, etc.
Experience/Education/Skills
- BA or BS degree in Finance or Accounting
- CPA or CA designation required
- 5+ years finance experience, with preferably experience with a Big 4 Audit Firm
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship
- Experience working in early-stage biotech/pharmaceutical companies as plus
- Hands-on experience with ERP systems (Quickbooks, Great Plains, NetSuites, etc.) and other financial systems (e.g., Workiva, FloCast, Bill.com, etc.) preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base Salary Range: $175,000 – $200,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
- Annual Bonus: Target of 10–15% of base salary
- Equity: Eligible for employee stock option grants
