Design Engineer

(Remote, Australia or SF)

This is a rare type of role that doesn’t often show up in Australia. We’re partnering with an SF startup building the next gen of enterprise creator tools, the kind that redefines a category in the way Notion did for docs or Canva did for design.

A small, world-class team backed by top investors, building a beautifully engineered product used by people who care deeply about craft and user experience.

We’re looking for a Design Engineer - someone overlaps strong engineering and great product taste. You’ll use your technical skill to build interfaces that are visually stunning and feel effortless to use.

What you’ll be doing

• Lead the end-to-end delivery of new AI related features, from shaping ideas to shipping them live.
• Build elegant, performant front-end systems using React, TypeScript and CSS (+ Tailwind).
• Take ownership of front-end infra and design systems, helping to create the layer where design and code meet.
• Add polish where Figma falls short, bringing life and motion to product experiences.
• Work closely with design and product to refine the interaction, feel and performance of every feature.

What we’re looking for

• 5+ years of front-end engineering experience with modern JavaScript and TypeScript.
• Strong grasp of CSS fundamentals. You know when to use CSS rather than JavaScript.
• Deep understanding of React and state management (bonus if you’ve worked with XState).
• Experience with design systems or front-end infrastructure that scales.
• A good eye for design and a genuine appreciation for detail.
• Solid software engineering foundations - structure, clarity and maintainability.

Nice to have

• Experience in a design-led product company such as Canva, Notion or Linear.
• Background in building creative or collaborative tools.
• Open-source contributions or a portfolio that shows your craft.
