Position Title: Soldering and Assembly Technician – Precision Electronics
Position Overview:
This role supports high-precision electronics manufacturing through manual assembly, soldering, and touch-up of circuit boards and subassemblies. The technician plays a key part in ensuring the electrical and mechanical reliability of the final product. This position requires strong hand-eye coordination, deep soldering knowledge, and a commitment to cleanliness, accuracy, and process control.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assemble and solder electronic components (resistors, capacitors, switches, ICs, wires, etc.) onto printed circuit boards (PCBs).
- Perform microcircuit and fine-pitch assembly work under a microscope, following cleanroom and ESD protocols.
- Align, mount, and secure components, wiring, and subassemblies using hand tools and small powered tools.
- Perform rework and repair on previously assembled boards, replacing or adjusting components as needed.
- Operate machines to prepare through-hole components for insertion and soldering processes.
Essential Competencies:
- Strong understanding of electronic component identification and placement.
- Proficient in soldering surface mount (SMT) and through-hole (THT) components to high-reliability standards.
- Skilled in assembly, inspection, and component installation for electronics manufacturing.
- Accurately document production activities and track order status and technician performance.
- Conduct thorough pre- and post-assembly inspections of PCBs to verify compliance with quality standards.
- Resolve basic assembly issues and communicate findings or recommendations to team members.
- Perform preventative maintenance and basic repairs on assembly tools and soldering equipment.
- Hold or be capable of earning high-reliability soldering certifications (e.g., Class III IPC or equivalent).
- Exhibit fine motor skills, steady hands, and visual acuity for microscope-based work.
- Use standard hand tools (soldering irons, wire cutters, pliers, tweezers, etc.) with precision and care.
- Train or assist junior assemblers when needed.
- Follow all ESD and safety procedures rigorously to protect components and personnel.
- Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
- Utilize computers for reading work instructions, reviewing process documents, and entering production data.
- Participate in job-related training programs to maintain and improve technical skills.
- Flexibility to take on additional tasks and responsibilities based on production needs.
Preferred Background:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in soldering or electromechanical PCB assembly.
- Strong familiarity with mechanical hardware and component identification systems (e.g., resistor color codes).
- Ability to interpret assembly blueprints, process documentation, and schematic drawings.
- Certification in high-reliability soldering (e.g., J-STD-001 and IPC 610/620) preferred or willingness to certify upon hire.
- Understanding of surface mount processes and rework techniques is beneficial.
- Must demonstrate basic math, reading, and writing skills.
Physical & Operational Requirements:
This position involves extended physical activity and frequent movement throughout the workday. Tasks may require:
- Alternating between standing and sitting for prolonged periods.
- Walking, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders as needed.
- Kneeling, crouching, and reaching at various heights.
- Repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements.
- Lifting and transporting materials or tools up to 60 pounds.
- Pushing and pulling carts, equipment, or workstations.
- Using a computer while standing or seated, depending on the task.
Due to the physical nature of the job, team members should expect a hands-on and movement-heavy work environment.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a clean, temperature-controlled manufacturing setting with an emphasis on organization, safety, and teamwork. Employees are assigned individual workstations and are expected to contribute to maintaining a productive and hazard-free environment. Team communication is supported with open workspaces and a collaborative culture.
Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Weekend work may be occasionally required based on production volume and deadlines.
