Tamper Operator – Rail Maintenance
📍 Location: Frequent Travel Along Rail Corridors Across the United States
👤 Reports to: Track Supervisor / Maintenance Foreman
💰 Salary: $32 - $45/ hr
About the Role
The Tamper Operator will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialized rail tamping equipment used for track maintenance. The operator will align and compact ballast beneath the tracks, ensuring safe, smooth, and stable rail conditions.
This role involves ensuring the proper alignment and leveling of the railroad tracks to meet safety standards and maintain operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will have experience operating a Jackson 6700 tamper and a solid understanding of track maintenance processes.
What You'll Do
- Operate tamper machines to align, level, and compact ballast beneath railway ties
- Follow maintenance schedules as directed by supervisors
- Calibrate tamper settings based on track conditions and specifications
- Read and interpret work orders, track diagrams, and equipment controls
- Conduct routine pre-operation inspections and minor maintenance
- Report defects or safety concerns immediately
- Maintain accurate daily work logs and equipment usage records
- Work closely with other track maintenance and MOW team members
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- 1–2 years of rail experience operating a tamper
- Valid driver’s license (CDL may be required, depending on state regulations)
- Familiarity with railroad standards (e.g. AREMA, FRA regulations)

Working Conditions
- Extensive travel along rail lines
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Frequent exposure to moving trains and heavy machinery
- May require night shifts, weekends, and extended hours as needed
Physical Requirements
- Able to sit, stand, and operate machinery for extended periods
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Climb on/off rail equipment safely
- Good vision, hearing, and hand-eye coordination required
