Overview:

When a beloved design leader we know joins Walmart to head up their People Design team, with a vision to lead with AI in designing a suite of net-new products for Walmart’s 2M+ employees, we say YES!

He’s already hired 17 world-class designers who have all relocated to Bentonville, so you’d be joining a fully-functioning, fleshed-out team to collaborate and experiment with. And, his design street cred is real: he's led a 50+ design team at a F200 insurance company, and led the innovation lab of a well-known, West-coast based tech company.

His strong vision is that AI will play a central role in this transformation, so in this role, you'll have an incredible opportunity to grow your AI expertise while designing smarter, more intuitive tools that empower people to work smarter, not harder. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of the employee experience for one of the largest workforces in America, so your visibility and impact are REAL.

They’re “building the plane in flight”, as these are all net-new products, so the right candidate has comfort with ambiguity, a love of experimentation and innovation, and 0 to 1 build experience.

You’ll help to shape the tools that power every stage of the employee journey—from payroll and benefits to learning, development, and beyond. You’ll unify multiple complex systems into a seamless, human-centered experience that supports associates throughout their entire career lifecycle.

They’re passionate about helping people build meaningful careers—whether that means growing within the company or launching into bold new paths—with tailored skill development, immersive training, and live better programs that support both personal and professional growth.

The roles:

They’re looking for 2 Principal Product Designers. Applicants will be considered for both roles simultaneously.

  • Principal PD, Time, Pay & Benefits (TPB)
  • Principal PD, Talent & Learning (T&L)

Role 1: Principal Product Designer, Time Pay & Benefits (TPB)

This tool will serve all 2.2 million Walmart associates, and you’ll be focused on simplifying and presenting complex compensation information in a user-friendly, digestible way.

In this role, you'll craft user-centered design solutions that communicate not only direct salary but also the indirect benefits that come with being a Walmart associate. This includes access to health benefits, time tracking, paycheck breakdowns, and associate discount card savings.

You'll be at the forefront of Walmart’s efforts to ensure every employee sees and understands their total value and potential career opportunities.

The ideal candidate has a strong visual design sensibility and an ability to work on complex, enterprise-scale systems, while still ensuring the design is accessible, intuitive, and valuable for front-line associates. You’ll be responsible for creating a user-friendly experience for Walmart’s “Me at Walmart” app, which will consolidate various benefits into one seamless experience for employees.

Responsibilities (TPB Team):

  • Lead design efforts for Walmart’s Total Compensation and Benefits tool, which will include detailed information on pay, benefits, time tracking, and more
  • Create user-centered design solutions to communicate complex compensation information in a clear, understandable way for Walmart associates
  • Work closely with product, engineering, and business teams to translate the tool’s needs and objectives into a compelling design that’s functional, usable, and accessible
  • Take ownership of the design direction for the Me at Walmart app, ensuring the integration of medical, vision, dental, and other benefits across three different providers
  • Design interfaces that are simple and intuitive, while handling complex data, for users across a range of technical expertise
  • Advocate for the user’s needs while balancing business requirements and technical constraints
  • Champion user feedback and conduct user research to improve the experience continually
  • Collaborate with other design leaders across teams to ensure design consistency and alignment across products

Role 2: Principal Product Designer, Talent and Learning (T&L)

They're also looking for a Principal Product Designer for the Talent and Learning team to help transform Walmart’s approach to employee development. You’ll focus on creating user-centered design solutions that will allow associates to track their career development, gain skills, and explore new opportunities within the company.

In this role, you’ll create products that empower associates to take ownership of their career journeys, from tracking and learning new skills to seeking new opportunities across Walmart’s various platforms.

You’ll design products that support employees through each stage of their journey, from recruiting and onboarding to performance management and skill development.

You’ll be instrumental in creating a more skill-based organization that allows employees to move horizontally and vertically across the company, helping Walmart attract and retain top talent by offering employees more opportunities to grow and develop their careers.

Responsibilities (T&L Team):

  • Lead the design efforts for Walmart’s Talent and Learning tools that span the full employee journey—from recruitment to performance management, learning, growth, and reinvention
  • Design systems that help employees track skills development and explore new opportunities within Walmart
  • Create intuitive, user-centered products that make it easy for associates to develop new skills and access career development resources
  • Work closely with product, engineering, and business teams to design tools that are not only functional but also foster career growth and employee retention
  • Develop products that support Walmart’s Live Better programs, skill training initiatives, and performance tracking tools
  • Take ownership of the design direction for the suite of tools used across 30+ core applications, ensuring a seamless experience across all stages of the employee journey
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistency and alignment across multiple platforms and tools
  • Conduct user research and advocate for the employee’s voice in all stages of the design process
  • Drive a shift from role-based to skills-based design, enabling greater movement for associates and better matching of talent with opportunities across the company
