District Partners has been engaged by a national, multi-entity organization with ~$100M in revenue to identify a Director of Accounting (Assistant Controller). This individual will serve as the operational leader of the accounting function, partnering closely with senior finance leadership to ensure accurate reporting, strong processes, and team effectiveness. Unlike highly siloed environments, this role requires someone who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves, stepping into different functions when needed, and leading from the front. You’ll oversee core accounting operations while helping elevate the team’s capabilities, particularly around process rigor, systems utilization, and analytical tools (Excel).

This is a high-impact opportunity for a hands-on accounting leader to step into a visible #2 role within finance, with a clear path toward future succession and broader leadership responsibility. The organization operates in a complex, multi-entity structure with a mix of operating entities and affiliated organizations—creating an environment that is both technically engaging and operationally dynamic.

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Wants to step into a true #2 accounting leadership role
  • Is tired of being siloed and wants broader ownership across accounting functions
  • Enjoys balancing technical accounting, team leadership, and process improvement
  • Is looking for a long-term growth path, not just a job

What You'll Do:

Accounting Operations & Close Leadership

  • Lead the month-end close process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency
  • Review and approve accounting activity across payroll, AP, AR, and journal entries
  • Ensure adherence to U.S. GAAP and accrual-based accounting standards
  • Maintain strong documentation and internal controls

Audit, Compliance & External Reporting

  • Support annual financial statement audits and benefit plan audits
  • Assist in coordination of nonprofit-related filings (including 990-related reporting)
  • Partner with leadership on technical accounting matters as needed

Team Leadership & Development

  • Directly manage a small accounting team (payroll, AP, AR)
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and hands-on support
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Step into team members’ responsibilities when needed to ensure continuity

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Work within a large ERP environment (Oracle-based or similar) to support reporting and operations
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements across workflows
  • Help strengthen the team’s capabilities in Excel and financial analysis

Budgeting & Planning Support

  • Contribute to the budgeting process (without owning it end-to-end)
  • Provide insights into operational performance and financial trends

What You'll Do:

  • 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including team leadership
  • Background in a nonprofit or multi-entity environment strongly preferred
  • Strong foundation in GAAP and accrual accounting
  • Experience overseeing payroll and general accounting functions
  • Prior exposure to a true ERP system (Oracle, NetSuite, PeopleSoft, Sage Intacct, etc.)
  • Advanced Excel skills (this is a key focus area for the team)
  • Willingness to remain hands-on and step into the details when needed
  • Strong communication skills with an emphasis on proactive, upward communication

Preferred Background

  • CPA or advanced degree (not required)
  • Experience in organizations with $40M–$100M+ in revenue
  • Exposure to multi-entity or consolidated reporting structures
  • Background in environments where individuals wear multiple hats vs. highly siloed roles

Why This Role:

  • Primarily remote, with intentional in-person touchpoints in the DC area
  • Team-oriented culture that values face-to-face collaboration for key moments (e.g., feedback, planning)
  • Managers are expected to be engaged, visible, and supportive of their teams’ growth
  • Emphasis on cross-training and coverage, ensuring the team operates seamlessly even during absences
  • Monthly remote work stipend
  • Employer-funded retirement contribution after one year
  • Strong healthcare benefits including HSA contributions
  • Regular team-building events and opportunities to connect in person
