Senior Automation Controls Engineer

This role focuses on designing, building, commissioning, and owning PLC-based automation systems from scratch, with a strong emphasis on safety, scalability, and modern control architectures.

This is a senior-level opportunity for a forward-thinking controls engineer who can help define system standards, guide technology direction, and bring state-of-the-art PLC and industrial automation experience into a growing global operation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop state-of-the-art automation and control systems for frac and stimulation equipment
  • Lead PLC and automation software development, commissioning, and testing for field-deployed systems
  • Develop, configure, and integrate Siemens PLC (TIA Portal) and National Instruments (cRIO / LabVIEW)-based systems
  • Design and implement industrial automation networks, including hardware selection, communication protocols, and system architecture
  • Perform hardware and software verification & validation
  • Support international field commissioning and system startups as needed
  • Partner closely with engineering leadership to evaluate, select, and standardize control system technologies
  • Bring in-house ownership of systems currently supported by contractors


Required Experience & Skills

  • 5–10+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls, or systems engineering
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
  • Siemens PLC (TIA Portal strongly preferred)
  • National Instruments platforms (cRIO / LabVIEW – hands-on or strong familiarity)
  • Proven experience building controls systems from scratch, not just maintenance
  • Experience with large-scale industrial processes (oil & gas, power generation, chemical, refining, pharma, etc.)
  • Solid background in:
  • Advanced control systems
  • PLC-based HMI development
  • Signal processing, control theory, and system dynamics
  • Industrial system integration


Technical Knowledge (Must-Have / Strong Plus)

  • Industrial communication protocols: Modbus, TCP/UDP, CAN, Profinet
  • PLC programming standards and best practices
  • System identification, data acquisition, measurement, and estimation techniques
  • Experience with sensors, actuators, pumps, VFDs, and industrial automation hardware
  • Ability to read and interpret:
  • Electrical schematics
  • P&IDs
  • Flow charts
  • Cause & effect diagrams


Safety & Compliance

  • Experience designing systems aligned with IEC safety standards
  • Strong knowledge of Functional Safety (IEC 61508, IEC 61131-3, SIL levels)


Software & Tools (Nice to Have)

  • Programming experience in C#, C++, Python, MATLAB, or Java
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio or similar IDEs


Travel & Work Environment

  • International travel to locations such as Norway, China, Argentina, or Mexico
  • Travel typically no longer than 1–2 weeks at a time
