About the Role:
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior High Voltage (HV) Design Engineer to join our growing HV Design Systems team. This hybrid role is based out of our Manchester office and offers an exciting opportunity to lead complex HV design projects across the UK.
As a Senior HV Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering comprehensive HV substation designs (up to 132kV), including system studies, cable route design, and regulatory compliance. You’ll bring deep technical knowledge and a proven track record of working on power systems design projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and deliver HV substation designs up to 132kV, including layouts, protection philosophy, and equipment specifications.
- Perform detailed power system studies including:
- Harmonics analysis
- Power flow studies
- Voltage drop and fault level calculations
- Prepare and review P28 and G99 compliance reports.
- Produce high-quality Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) and cable routing designs.
- Contribute to feasibility, concept, and detailed design phases of HV projects.
- Ensure all designs meet relevant UK standards, codes of practice, and client specifications.
- Liaise with DNOs, ICPs, and clients on technical matters.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide peer review of technical deliverables.
Key Skills & Experience:
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- Proven experience in HV electrical design, particularly substations up to 132kV.
- Strong technical background in power system studies and modelling software (e.g., DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP).
- In-depth understanding of UK grid codes and standards, including G99 and P28.
- Expertise in harmonics analysis and mitigation strategies.
- Strong command of cable route design principles and practices.
- Proficient in producing and interpreting SLDs and design drawings.
- Excellent report-writing and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders effectively.
Desirable:
- Chartered Engineer or working toward chartership (IET or similar).
- Experience with renewable energy grid connections and embedded generation.
- Knowledge of DNO connection application processes.
