Chief Marketing Officer

The Chief Marketing Officer is an executive level position reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The CMO will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive marketing strategies and crisis response. This includes analyzing market trends, researching potential collegiate chapter development opportunities, driving brand awareness, and maximizing revenue generation through impactful campaigns and external proposals, while aligning marketing efforts with overall business objectives. The CMO will use various electronic, written and in-person communication tools for messaging while keeping the organization’s approved brand voice, visualization, and key themes consistent and ensure materials are aligned with the priorities of the organization.

 

Craft Messaging

  • Serve alongside our client’s CEO and National President as spokesperson for the Fraternity with regard to press releases and written interviews/quotes.
  • Represent the Fraternity in certain industry projects and at industry conferences, as assigned by the CEO.
  • Serve as the gatekeeper and primary contact for media outlets.
  • Work with the CEO and crisis/public relations firm to ensure all key leadership is properly media trained, that crisis protocol procedures are up to date and communicated across departments, and fine tune storytelling and messaging to be meaningful and relevant to various audiences.
  • Oversee and approve all mass emails as well as the social media presence of the Fraternity.
  • Maintain the look and design of our client’s external and internal websites making recommendations for enhancement on a regular basis.
  • Work with the Event Planner to execute the Supreme Governing Council’s vision for all national meetings including but not limited to Firesides Leadership Training and Convention.
  • Oversee and contribute to the production of The Eleusis magazine.
  • Oversee the design and production of primary print communication tools with key audiences including but not limited to: parent brochures, campus partner brochures, programs, etc.
  • Work with the Event Planner, Executive Headquarters staff, production partners and the CEO to lead execution of their podcast including guest list generation, promotion, filming, editing and publishing.
  • Articulate and write certain national messages including the State of the Fraternity delivered on multiple occasions by the National President and on behalf of Our client’s Fraternity/related entities with approval and direction from the CEO/senior leadership in accordance with the Our client’s Style Guide and Brand Visualization Guide.
  • Use creative storytelling to create compelling case language in a variety of marketing campaigns including those related to educational fundraising, Giving Tuesday, and Founders’ Day.
  • Write messaging across communication channels to celebrate our client’s founding and Eleusnia including Eleusinia talking points and related projects.
  • Review messaging drafted by other staff members for specific projects for accuracy, conveyance of brand promise as well as proper tone and voice.
  • Partner with Our client’s branding firm on branding or re-branding projects.
  • Generate annual holiday messaging to membership at large and external partners.
  • Develop educational curriculum, including annual recruitment package deliverables, for collegiate Marketing Directors and Recruitment Chairs, among others, and present the information to chapters as part of the Fraternity’s special assistance program on a regular basis.
  • Write and edit content for key communication vehicles, such as websites, brochures, letters and other publications as assigned by the CEO.


Supervise Marketing personnel, outside partners, and resources

The Chief Marketing Officer will jointly oversee the following staff members on assigned projects and lead all Marketing Department meetings. Work assignments will be made through the Fraternity’s project management system, and the CMO will have responsibility for approving time off requests and expense report review.

The CMO will have the ability to hold one-on-one meetings with marketing staff on an as-needed basis regarding respective projects:

  • Event Planner
  • Brand Designer
  • Brand and Campaigns Manager
  • Brand Associate
  • Other Marketing Department staff

The CMO will also work with other staff members to develop and manage annual budgets for the following:

  • Assigned projects within the Communications
  • The Eleusis and Special Assistance budgets

The CMO will work with the following internal customers, outside vendors and other audiences:

  • Fraternity’s Foundation
  • National teams and committees, the National Convention Team, the National Recruitment Team and the National Extension Teams most often
  • Outside crisis firm
  • Outside branding firm
  • National Panhellenic Conference/National Interfraternity Conference


This position requires:

  • College degree in marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in public relations and communications, preferably with a nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing a national communications or public relations strategy.
  • Ability to work independently, remain motivated and deadline-oriented.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, as well as strong art direction and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated success in project management, including working on teams and meeting key deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success producing complete work products on time and within budget.
  • Flexibility and ability to work in the unpredictable environment of crisis and business development where opportunities pop up unexpectedly.
  • Experience working with or in a volunteer organization is preferred but not required for the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including an optimistic, flexible attitude.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience with Canva, Adobe, Microsoft Office products and knowledge of working with membership databases.
  • Some graphic design experience.
  • Photography/videography experience is a plus.
