Assistant Controller


Our client is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Assistant Controller to join their team. This individual will play a key role in managing financial operations, overseeing accounting processes, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The ideal candidate has a strong accounting background, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to think critically, follow through, and take initiative.



Key Responsibilities



Financial Management



  • Assist in preparing and analyzing financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow projections.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closings.
  • Manage intercompany and investment/equity accounting.
  • Oversee and monitor year-end audit and tax return processes, working with multiple CPA firms and property accountants.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate risks.


Asset & Project Management



  • Monitor financial accounts for up to 15 properties, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Work with property accountants and asset management teams to verify timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Ensure project job costs reflect actual expenses, including proper charges, accruals, and budget updates.
  • Oversee the cost certification process for completed projects.
  • Maintain accuracy and timeliness in construction draw requests.


Compliance & Reporting



  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, HUD, LIHTC, and other applicable financial regulations.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits, preparing required supporting documentation.
  • Manage tax reporting and compliance requirements with lenders and investors.


Budgeting & Forecasting



  • Assist in the development and monitoring of project budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Collaborate with leadership and project managers to align financial goals with project milestones.


Process Improvement & Leadership



  • Identify and implement efficiencies to streamline accounting processes.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional development and best practices.


Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in real estate development, affordable housing, or partnership accounting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Yardi, Viewpoint Spectrum) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, HUD, LIHTC compliance, and cost certification.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, think proactively, and follow through on projects.


Compensation




  • $140,000 – $150,000 base salary, with additional benefits and incentives.
