Vale Group, a nationwide specialized recruitment firm, has partnered with a global precision machine tool manufacturer based in the area of Farmington Hills, MI that is actively searching for an experienced Controls Engineer. This is an onsite opportunity paying up to $110,000 annually based on experience, with flexibility for the right individual. The engineer in this role will take full ownership of both controls software and hardware responsibilities within a collaborative engineering team, supporting the design, commissioning, and customer-facing execution of highly specialized precision honing and machining systems. This is not a robotics-focused role. The ideal candidate comes from a machine tool, CNC, or precision industrial manufacturing background and thrives in an environment where technical precision, customer interaction, and independent problem-solving are part of the daily routine. Some domestic and international travel is expected as part of project execution and customer acceptance activities, which should be in the 15% range.
Requirements of the Controls Engineer:
● 7 or more years of controls engineering experience within a machine tool, CNC, or precision industrial manufacturing environment
● Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent hands-on engineering experience will be considered
● Strong experience with both controls software and controls hardware design in a manufacturing setting
● Proficiency in PLC programming with solid ladder logic and structured text skills
● Strong experience with Siemens and/or Allen-Bradley platforms including Step 7, TIA Portal, Sinumerik 840D, Studio 5000, and FactoryTalk
● Hardware design knowledge including electrical, pneumatic, and fluid-related controls systems; EPLAN and AutoCAD Electrical experience required
● Solid understanding of industrial communication networks including Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, Canbus, RS232, and RS485
● Strong problem-solving ability, customer communication skills, and the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with project and mechanical engineering teams
● Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as project needs require
● Robotics-focused backgrounds are not a fit for this position
Responsibilities of the Controls Engineer:
● Lead controls engineering activities across both software and hardware for high-precision honing and machine tool systems
● Design, modify, and support electrical, pneumatic, and fluid-related controls systems for new and existing machinery
● Develop, write, troubleshoot, commission, debug, and run off machine controls with minimal supervision
● Partner with mechanical engineering and project management on design decisions, project timelines, and technical execution
● Read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings to support implementation, revisions, and system optimization
● Support motion control integration, network communications, and machine startup through final customer acceptance
● Interface directly with customers during shop-floor activities, technical meetings, and on-site installation or acceptance phases ● Travel to customer facilities domestically and internationally as required to support machine commissioning and runoff
● Uphold internal engineering standards, documentation requirements, and continuous improvement efforts
