Staff Accountant / Bookkeeper

Consulting / Temporary

Location: Fairfield County, CT

Schedule: On-site preferred; some flexibility for hybrid

Hours: Approximately 30–40 hours per week

Start: Immediate

Company Overview

Our client is a small, established international company seeking an experienced Staff Accountant / Bookkeeper to join its CT office. The organization has approximately 20 employees overall, with a close-knit team of five working onsite.

This is an immediate consulting need with potential for long-term permanent hire, reporting to the Dir. of Finance.

Position Overview

The Staff Accountant / Bookkeeper will work closely with the Director of Finance and support the day-to-day accounting, cash management, and financial operations of the business.

This is a hands-on position ideal for someone comfortable working in a smaller company environment where responsibilities are broad, and priorities can shift. The successful candidate should be organized, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing transactional accounting while communicating with banks, vendors, and other third parties.

A college degree is not required. Practical accounting/bookkeeping experience and the ability to independently manage day-to-day responsibilities are more important.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day accounts payable and accounts receivable activities
  • Review, process, and upload invoices into the company's accounting/operating system
  • Perform bank reconciliations and investigate discrepancies
  • Assist with daily cash management and treasury activities
  • Record and post banking transactions accurately and in a timely manner
  • Monitor cash activity and assist with maintaining accurate cash balances
  • Communicate with banks and other third-party providers regarding transactions, payments, cash applications, and account-related matters
  • Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation
  • Assist with vendor and customer account questions and reconciliations
  • Support the Director of Finance with routine accounting and financial activities
  • Help ensure transactions are properly recorded, and accounting information remains current and accurate
  • Assist with additional accounting, reporting, and administrative projects as needed

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in bookkeeping, staff accounting, or a similar hands-on accounting position
  • Strong working knowledge of AP, AR, bank reconciliations, and general accounting processes
  • Experience with cash management or treasury-related activities is highly desirable
  • Comfortable working directly with banks, vendors, and other outside parties
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate financial records
  • Organized and able to manage multiple responsibilities in a small-company environment
  • Comfortable working independently while partnering closely with the Director of Finance
  • Strong communication and follow-through
  • Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
  • Sage Intacct experience is a plus but not required
  • College degree is not required; relevant hands-on experience will be strongly considered

Schedule & Work Environment

The company would ideally like someone who can work on-site in Westport, particularly during the training and transition period, although there is some flexibility for the right candidate for more of a hybrid schedule over time. The position will not exceed 40 hours per week and could potentially average closer to 30–35 hours per week. For candidates seeking a traditional full-time schedule, the company can accommodate approximately 40 hours.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being a key contributor within a small, collaborative office rather than one person in a large accounting department. You will work directly with the Director of Finance, receive hands-on training, and take ownership of meaningful day-to-day accounting responsibilities.

While the immediate need is temporary, there is real potential for the position to become a long-term or permanent role depending on business needs and overall fit.

Interview Process

The process will move quickly:

  • One video interview with the Director of Finance
  • Immediate decision/start for the right candidate

The company would ideally like someone in place within one week or sooner.
