Director of Finance

We’re seeking a highly skilled and values-driven Director of Finance to provide strategic leadership in managing the Nation’s financial health. As a vital member of our senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Band Manager, the Director of Finance will oversee financial planning, reporting, and compliance functions that support essential programs and services, including health, education, lands, housing, and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities 

Strategic and Operational Planning:  

  • Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of Financial Policies and Procedures. 
  • Coordinate staff-level work plans to ensure departmental priorities are progressing. 
  • Monitor progress of staff work plans and make necessary adjustments. 

Financial Management: 

  • Lead budgeting, audit, accounting, purchasing and long-range forecasting functions. 
  • Oversee recording and distribution of revenues into approved budgets and funding agreements. 
  • Prepare projections, financial statements, benefit analysis and consolidations. 
  • Oversee and provide hands-on support as may be required for accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions including cheque requisitions, invoices, payroll, benefits and insurance.  
  • Oversee taxation data and ensure accurate processing of rebates.  
  • Review and approve bank reconciliations.  
  • Prepare financial reports and conduct analysis for presentation of information to support decision-making. 
  • Act as liaison between the organization and its shareholders, the investing public and external financial analysts. 

Human Resource Management: 

  • Supervise direct-reporting staff and provide regular feedback to continue reinforcing skills development. 
  • Manage department performance and implement learning and development plans to support staff growth. 
  • Monitor and approve timesheets and entitlements for direct-reporting staff. 

 

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Excellent knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and standards.  
  • Excellent computer skills including experience in word processing, spreadsheet, database and financial programming or software operation. 
  • Knowledge of Sage 50 and 300. 
  • Strong background dealing with various funding agreements and reporting requirements. 
  • Excellent communication skills including ability to explain technical concepts in non-technical terms to staff and leadership. 
  • Strong organizational skills including ability to develop and document detailed procedures. 
  • Self-starter with excellent work ethic.  
  • Strong team leadership with particular emphasis on coaching and skill development. 

 

Experience and Education Requirements:  

  • Post-secondary degree in finance, economics, commerce or a related field is required. 
  • A professional finance or accounting designation (e.g. CPA) is preferred. 
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a financial role. 
  • Demonstrated increase in scope and responsibility of roles within a financial management capacity within an Indigenous environment is preferred.

  • Display a commitment to the values and culture of Ginoogaming First Nation. 
  • Ability to provide a clear criminal record and credit check. 
  • Eligibility to work in Canada.
