Job Title: Natural Resources Crew Member

Employment Status: Temporary, Non-Exempt


Employment Duration: Up to 24 weeks for 35 hours per week


Pay Rate: Up to $19/ hour, commensurate with, certifications, and experience. Rate increases during employment may be available and contingent upon performance, attainment of required certifications, and other factors.


Job Summary and Essential Functions:

Springfield Township, located in northern Oakland County, Michigan, has been a regional leader in conservation planning and sustainable development for over 30 years. The Natural Resources Crew Member position offers an exciting opportunity to help advance the township’s commitment to its residents and natural heritage. Successful applicants will have an opportunity to work in one of the highest quality prairie fen complexes in the world, while improving habitat and assisting with other conservation efforts for numerous rare plant and animal species including the federally endangered Poweshiek skipperling butterfly.


Under the supervision of the Natural Resources Manager, the Natural Resources Crew Member performs ecological restoration work tasks across Springfield Township in a diverse array of habitats on township-owned and partner lands. Habitat management tasks in support of ecological restoration include invasive species control, preparations for prescribed burning, debris removal, native plant seed collection and collection of field data in support of these activities. Other activities may include assisting with partner-led research and species recovery efforts, hosting volunteer workdays and field tours, and assisting with activities for other township departments. The crew members will be responsible for preparation and maintenance of equipment and work logs used in these management activities.


Natural Resources Crew Member positions are temporary, full-time positions working up to 35 hours per week with an anticipated employment duration of up to 24 weeks. The position involves extensive outdoor physical labor in diverse weather conditions and may require working some evenings and weekends.


Position Responsibilities & Scope:

  • Follow workplans and directions as provided by supervisor.
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  • May work under infrequent supervision.
  • May provide field supervision and direction of work tasks by contractors.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
  • Requires long hours in isolated settings.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of power equipment.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Ability to conduct ecological stewardship activities in the field
  • Ability to provide both oral and written communication that is easily understood and direct in its content
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in Forestry, Aquatic and Right-of-Way categories from the State of Michigan within 90 days of employment.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Greater than one year of experience in land management.
  • Documented training or certification for power tool operation.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in Forestry, Aquatic and Right-of-Way categories from the State of Michigan
  • Experience working in or knowledge of prairie fens and associated natural communities and experience following conservation guidelines when managing habitat for rare species.
