CHEMIST/REGULATORY & ENVIRONMENTAL

 

POSITION INFORMATION

Chemist in the Laboratory with Regulatory & Environmental responsibilities. Reports to the Technical Director. Exempt FLSA status.

 

SUMMARY

Performs research, product development, analyses and testing. Coordinates all regulatory and related environmental activities related to product and facility compliance in conjunction with the Technical Director.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Chemist

  • Perform specialized and advanced analyses, testing, and formulation of new and existing coating products and requirements.
  • Perform small batch/sample manufacture, color matching, and testing. Assist in developing and specifying processes for coatings scale-up and manufacture.
  • Evaluate new and existing raw materials for product improvement, availability, and/or cost benefits.
  • Prepare reports and document detailing project design, results, and conclusions; recommend additional actions or research.
  • Support existing product lines via internal and external customer interaction, including technical service visits when required.
  • Prepare standards and develop specifications for products, processing, testing, and end-use applications.
  • Solve technical problems and recommend solutions.
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate a variety of specialized test and lab equipment in accordance with established internal and ISO standards.
  • Maintain documentation and associated record keeping re: formulation specifics, processing, testing and results.
  • Effectively communicate with and provide technical support to co-workers, suppliers, and customers on both a formal and informal basis.
  • Perform regular housekeeping to help maintain the laboratory and associated work areas in a neat and orderly condition in compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.
  • Actively support continuous improvement of products, processes, resources, and methodologies for continued corporate success and growth.
  • Utilize design of experiment approach (DOE): ability to design, document, report, interpret, and present findings as well as design follow-up experiments.
  • Ability and willingness to travel in support of customers and products as required.

 

Regulatory & Environmental

  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of applications, reports, or other correspondence to applicable regulatory agencies including but not limited to Federal and State EPA as well as local authorities.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of regulatory affairs policies and procedures to ensure and maintain facility regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant regulatory regulations, including proposed and final rules.
  • Maintain knowledge of new and revised raw material properties and composition to ensure and maintain end use product (including specific customer) compliance.
  • Develop and recommend regulatory strategies and implementation plans for the preparation and submission of new or revised products.
  • Manage all applicable product regulatory documentation including SDS (Safety Date Sheet) generation.
  • Maintain existing SDS software including raw material data and software updates.
  • Help/assist training of staff in applicable regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Interact collaboratively with all company staff to coordinate activities within and between departments.
  • May coordinate specific technical and environmental training, e.g., RCRA.
  • Prepare and publish monthly regulatory and environmental issues status report in a timely fashion for MRC monthly meetings.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science discipline (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science preferred).
  • 5-10 years experience formulating paints, coatings or similar products with a strong understanding of product and industry regulations.
  • May consider a combination of education and experience.
  • 5-10 years direct experience in reporting to regulatory agencies or equivalent
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals and publications.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, suppliers, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Working knowledge and basic competency with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Microsoft Teams); and other industry and company specific applications (formulation/processing software, color analysis and matching programs, etc.).
  • Ability to learn and institute any other required software systems.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize corporate ERP (Batch Master) software system as it relates to raw materials, products, and manufacturing.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize SDS (Lisam ExESS) generation software.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize all federal, state, and local reporting systems
  • Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Demonstrated ability in planning, resource allocation, and evaluation of methods.
  • Efficient and cost-effective use of resources.
  • Excellent organization and scheduling skills with the ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing demands.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information to a variety of people (i.e. customers, public groups, and management).
  • Candidates must be able to pass a color test, wear a fitted respirator, and tolerate solvent odors and other chemicals used within the facility.
