Overview:


A leading multi-discipline engineering design and consulting firm is seeking an experienced Department Manager in Civil Engineering, to lead and develop their civil team in North Charleston, SC. This role is perfect for a seasoned professional with a strong background in civil engineering land development, who is passionate about making a difference in the community and mentoring early-career professionals.


Responsibilities:


  • Oversee design development, preparation, and administration of contract documents, cost estimates, and client relations for various projects including commercial, residential, multi-family, industrial, K-12 schools, and mixed-use developments.
  • Lead a dedicated engineering team, providing mentorship and strategic growth for the department.
  • Drive business development initiatives and community involvement to facilitate firm growth, coordinating with the corporate business development manager.
  • Ensure client satisfaction through excellent communication and designs that meet budget and timeline goals.
  • Maintain quality control over construction document preparation, including site layouts, grading plans, utility plans, storm water plans, roadway plans, and related project aspects.
  • Manage permitting submittals and coordinate with authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Handle project proposals, contract management, project scheduling, budgeting, and monthly invoicing.
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills to effectively interact with staff, clients, and public authorities.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer Registration required (South Carolina preferred).
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional engineering design and project management experience.
  • Strong background in the land development industry, including site planning, grading design, and construction document preparation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and adjust to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design software is preferred, though this position does not involve performing AutoCAD design tasks.
  • Proven business development skills and excellent financial management abilities.
  • Familiarity with codes, standards, and technical specifications from authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Strong collaborator with experience presenting in front of boards, commissions, or councils is a plus.
