Global Lease Accountant / Lease Accounting Reviewer (Remote)

Location: Remote  (Able to work CST hours as needed) 

Job Type: Contract (3–6 Months | Potential Extension Based)

Pay Rate: $50–$70/hr (Based on experience)

Schedule: Monday–Friday | Full-Time 8-5pm -attend CST meetings as needed

About the Role

Our client is seeking two experienced accounting professionals to support its Global Lease Accounting team during a period of increased acquisition activity and high project volume.

These positions focus heavily on commercial lease abstraction, technical lease accounting, and lease administration supporting a large North American real estate portfolio.

The ideal candidates have experience reading and interpreting complex commercial lease agreements, performing lease abstraction, understanding technical lease accounting, and ensuring accurate accounting treatment under applicable accounting standards.

The team is hiring two experience levels:

  • Lease Accountant (3–5 years):Primary "doer" responsible for preparing lease abstractions, performing lease accounting activities, and completing calculations. 
  • Senior Lease Accounting Reviewer (6–10 years): Primary “reviewer” responsible for reviewing lease abstractions, validating accounting conclusions, coordinating with preparers, and ensuring accuracy across a high-volume workload.  Ability to understand offshore time zones/different time zone - coordinating work across multiple teams or offshore support groups. 

Both positions support a collaborative global team and work closely with offshore preparers, requiring excellent organization, communication, and time-management skills.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and/or review lease abstractions for new commercial leases and lease amendments. 
  • Read, interpret, and analyze commercial lease agreements. 
  • Extract critical lease terms and accurately enter lease information into the lease accounting system. 
  • Interpret lease provisions including renewals, options, amendments, escalations, and other contractual terms. 
  • Apply appropriate technical accounting treatment under applicable lease accounting standards. 
  • Prepare and/or review straight-line rent calculations. 
  • Support lease administration activities and maintain accurate lease records. 
  • Prepare and/or review tenant sales reporting calculations. 
  • Prepare and/or review annual operating expense reconciliations. 
  • Prepare quarterly operating expense accruals. 
  • Support annual rent start letter preparation. 
  • Maintain complete supporting documentation for lease accounting activities. 
  • Prepare ad hoc schedules, reconciliations, and financial analyses as requested. 
  • Collaborate with Accounting, Property Management, Operations, and internal stakeholders. 
  • Manage multiple deadlines while maintaining exceptional accuracy. 
  • Coordinate effectively with offshore preparers by planning work around time zone differences and ensuring questions and feedback are communicated proactively. 

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. 
  • 3–10 years of professional accounting experience. 
  • Experience performing lease abstraction by reviewing commercial lease agreements and extracting key financial and legal terms into a lease accounting or lease administration system. 
  • Experience interpreting and reviewing commercial lease agreements. 
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge
  • Experience with ASC 842 lease accounting. 
  • Knowledge of IFRS, Fair Value Accounting, and Tax Basis Accounting
  • Requires experience preparing or reviewing straight-line rent calculations
  • Experience supporting lease administration. 
  • Ability to understand offshore time zones/different time zone - coordinating work across multiple teams or offshore support groups. 
  • Strong understanding of GAAP. 
  • Experience using ERP systems such as JD Edwards or similar ERP platforms. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills. 
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities. 
  • Exceptional attention to detail. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment

Bonus Qualifications

  • CPA, Chartered Accountant, or equivalent certification. 
  • Public accounting experience. 
  • Commercial real estate experience. 
  • Experience supporting high-volume lease portfolios. 
  • Experience reviewing complex lease accounting matters. 
  • Experience coordinating work across multiple teams or offshore support groups. 

 

Experience Levels

Lease Accountant (Doer)

  • Approximately 3–5 years of accounting experience. 
  • Performs lease abstraction and prepares lease accounting work. 
  • Completes calculations and accounting entries. 
  • Supports lease administration activities. 

Senior Lease Accounting Reviewer

  • Approximately 6–10 years of accounting experience. 
  • Reviews lease abstractions and accounting work prepared by others. 
  • Reviews technical accounting conclusions. 
  • Coordinates work across multiple preparers. 
  • Manages priorities, timelines, and high-volume workloads while ensuring quality and accuracy
