UK Transport Planner

We are currently working in partnership with a forward-thinking logistics organisation who are looking to appoint a Transport Planner to support their national transport operations.

This is a key role within the business, responsible for planning and coordinating fleet activity, ensuring efficient use of resources, and delivering a high level of service across a fast-paced and evolving transport network.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate daily transport operations, ensuring effective allocation of vehicles, routes, and loads
  • Optimise fleet utilisation to maximise efficiency, reduce empty running, and improve overall performance
  • Monitor transport activity and adjust plans where required to respond to operational changes or delays
  • Work closely with transport management to ensure planning aligns with vehicle availability and operational requirements
  • Use data and system insights to improve planning accuracy, performance, and service delivery
  • Identify opportunities to improve route efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance operational performance
  • Maintain regular communication with customers, providing updates, managing expectations, and resolving any issues
  • Ensure all deliveries are scheduled in line with customer requirements and service level agreements
  • Support the development and improvement of planning systems and processes
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure smooth coordination across transport, operations, and customer service functions
  • Lead by example within the planning function, promoting accountability and high performance
  • Support and mentor junior team members where required
  • Ensure all planning activities comply with transport regulations, including driver hours and safety standards
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on efficiency, service, and operational performance


Essential Skills & Experience:

  • MUST have previous experience within a transport planning or logistics coordination role
  • Strong understanding of route planning, fleet utilisation, and transport operations
  • Experience working within a logistics, distribution, or fleet-based environment
  • Good understanding of transport compliance and regulations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both internally and with customers
  • Experience using transport or planning systems (TMS experience advantageous)
  • Proactive approach with a focus on continuous improvement
