We are looking for a temporary-to-permanent Junior Staff Accountant for a journalism nonprofit. This role is full-time and remote, but preference is for a candidate in the Washington, DC area.

Is This Your Dream Job: The Junior Staff Accountant is responsible for AP processing, General Ledger (GL) tasks, cash, and journal entries focuses on maintaining daily financial records by coding and processing invoices, reconciling payments received from online donations at month-end, and uploading all donations to the General Ledger. This position is often a stepping stone for recent graduates or early-career individuals, requiring strong attention to detail, knowledge of basic accounting principles, and proficiency in accounting software.
Our Ideal Candidate:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 1 - 3 years of experience in Accounts Payable, General Ledger accounting, and reconciliations
- Strong knowledge of basic accounting principles and GAAP
- Advanced Excel skills
- Proficiency in accounting software; Sage Intacct preferred
- Experience with nonprofit accounting
- Experience with payment platforms (Trolley)
- Knowledge of 1099 and 1042 filing requirements preferred
- Works well with others and maintains a practical, engaged work style
- Detail-oriented with a keen awareness of priorities and deadlines
- Customer service experience or experience communicating with granteees preferred
How You'll Spend Your Day
Daily Accounting Operations (65%)
- Process daily transactions to record in the accounting system.
- Collaborate with the external accounting team to ensure accurate recording of daily transactions in the accounting system.
- Review bank transactions to ensure correct coding.
- Prepare journal entries for the requested re-code transactions and staffing cost allocations.
- Accounts Payable (AP) Processing and Customer Service Support: contacting new payees/vendors to facilitate account setup with the Trolley payment platform, including completion of required forms, and providing ongoing support to address any payment transfer issues.
Month-End and Financial Reporting (10%)
- Upload online donation to the accounting system after reconciling between bank deposit and FundraiseUp report.
- Liaison between HR and external accounting for the invoices of the benefits of the payroll related entries.
- Review transactions of the bank accounts and record correctly in Intacct.
Year-End and Compliance (10%)
- In collaboration with the Director of Finance, prepare for year-end close
- Prepare the required schedules and collect supporting documentation for the annual audit PBC
- In collaboration with the Operations Coordinator and Director of Finance, prepare and process annual 1099 and 1042.
System and Process Management (5%)
- Work with the Operations Team to develop process and system improvements.
- Identify and recommend improvements to accounting processes and procedures to the Director of Finance.
Cross-Functional Collaboration (5%)
- Collaborate with the Development team to update donations received via online donation via bank activity twice a month.
- Coordinate work with external accounting capacity as needed.
- Participate in the planning processes for the organization
- Support other team members as necessary.
Participation in efforts and projects that support the organization culture and values (5%)
- This may include task forces, training sessions, meetings, committees, special projects, organizational events, and any other activities that support the organization.
