Careers In Nonprofits has been retained by the Mineralogical Society of America to lead in the search for their next Deputy Director.

 

This is a Full-Time (30-hours/week), Hybrid position located in Chantilly, VA with a starting salary of $70,000.

LOCATION: Chantilly, VA (Hybrid, 2 Days/Week In-Office)

POSITION TITLE: Deputy Director

SCHEDULE: Full-Time (30-hours/week)

DURATION: Permanent

SALARY: $70,000 

 

Is This Your Dream Job? The Deputy Director will focus on the internal efficiency, infrastructure, and day-to-day functioning of MSA. This includes managing such functions as accounting, communications, fulfillment, membership, subscription, IT, and the physical plant.

 

This position will play an instrumental role in the future and growth of the society. It involves handling highly confidential and sensitive information and interaction with all MSA stakeholders. The Deputy Director will serve as a second-in-command to the Executive Director.

 

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • 10+ years’ Experience in Organizational and/or Operational Management
  • Excellent Communication Skills, both Written and Oral
  • Self-Directed, Highly Organized, and Capable of Managing Multiple Priorities and Deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and WordPress
  • Bachelor’s Degree- REQUIRED
  • Business Management- Preferred

 

How You Will Spend Your Day: 

  • Directly assists the Executive Director in strategic planning, organizational vision, and sometimes acts as a de facto second-in-command, stepping in when the Executive Director is absent.
  • Ensures MSA has the necessary physical and technological resources as well as the proper operation, repair, and maintenance of the office space, equipment, and IT infrastructure.
  • Oversees the Accounting Office, which consists of two part-time employees.
  • Prepares the payroll and is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of the required federal, state, and local payroll; employee benefits; and insurance reports. 
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director to develop the annual budget with the Treasurer and ensures that operational expenditures stay within budget and that resources are utilized cost-effective.
  • Works with the MSA accounting team to support annual audits.
  • Handles MSA correspondence, including student undergraduate prizes, copyright permission letters, donor thanks, etc.
  • Oversees the fulfillment, membership, and subscription services.
  • Oversees MSA electronic communications (website updates, MSA-Announce, MSA-Talk).
  • Supports Executive Director with other related duties as assigned.
