A well-established mechanical contractor is hiring a Mechanical Estimator to support competitive bids and negotiated work across HVAC and plumbing scopes. This role will be responsible for takeoffs, subcontractor/vendor pricing, scope reviews, and building accurate estimates that protect margin and set projects up for a clean handoff to operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed estimates for HVAC and plumbing work (plan/spec takeoffs and cost build-ups)
- Review drawings, specs, addenda, and bid requirements; identify scope gaps and risk
- Develop quantities for ductwork, piping, insulation, equipment, fixtures, supports, valves, specialties, etc.
- Solicit and level pricing from vendors and subcontractors; validate lead times and alternates
- Build labor/material/equipment estimates using production rates and historical cost data
- Assist with value engineering and alternates to improve competitiveness
- Support bid day activities: clarifications, scope letters, and final pricing reviews
- Coordinate handoff to project management: assumptions, exclusions, clarifications, and budget breakdowns
- Maintain estimating templates, databases, and supplier pricing updates

- Commercial TI and new construction
- Multifamily / mixed-use (depending on portfolio)
- Healthcare, education, industrial, and light manufacturing (as applicable)
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years estimating experience in mechanical construction (HVAC and/or plumbing)
- Strong ability to read mechanical plans/specs and understand construction means/methods
- Experience performing accurate takeoffs and assembling complete bid packages
- Proficiency with Excel and common construction documentation tools
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience estimating both HVAC and plumbing scopes (or strong one + exposure to the other)
- Familiarity with estimating software (e.g., Trimble Accubid, Esticom, FastPIPE/FastDUCT, QuoteSoft, Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff)
- Experience with design-build, negotiated work, or conceptual budgeting
- Knowledge of local codes and permitting requirements
- Strong communication skills for scope reviews and bid presentations
