A growing construction services organization is seeking a Director of Mechanical to lead and scale its mechanical division (HVAC and plumbing, with potential overlap into controls/piping depending on portfolio). This leader will own operational performance, team development, project delivery, and profitability—building a high-performing group across preconstruction, project management, field operations, and service (if applicable).
Core Responsibilities
- Own P&L and operating performance for the mechanical division (revenue, margin, backlog, cash flow)
- Lead and develop teams across estimating, preconstruction, project management, field supervision, and service
- Standardize best practices for project execution: budgeting, forecasting, schedule control, change management, and closeout
- Partner with business development/leadership on pipeline strategy, pursuits, and client expansion
- Provide executive oversight on major projects (contract review, risk management, staffing plans, escalation support)
- Improve operational systems (processes, reporting, KPIs, project controls, vendor strategy, safety performance)
- Drive talent strategy: hiring, mentorship, performance management, and succession planning
- Strengthen subcontractor and vendor relationships; negotiate strategic agreements
- Ensure strong quality and safety culture across all job sites and operations
- Lead customer relationships for key accounts and ensure repeat business through performance
Ideal Background
- 10+ years in mechanical construction leadership (HVAC/plumbing), with increasing responsibility
- Proven success managing multi-project portfolios and scaling teams
- Strong command of:
- Mechanical estimating/precon strategy
- Job cost controls, forecasting, and change order management
- Contract risk, procurement, scheduling, and field execution
- Experience leading through superintendents/foremen and developing PM teams
- Comfortable interfacing with ownership/executive leadership, GCs, and owners
Required Qualifications
- Deep knowledge of commercial HVAC and/or plumbing systems and construction practices
- Demonstrated leadership of managers/PMs/estimators/superintendents
- Strong financial acumen and operational discipline (KPI-driven execution)
- Ability to lead across multiple job sites and priorities
- Proficiency with construction tech/tools (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam, MS Project/Primavera, Excel; ERP a plus)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with design-build, negotiated work, or self-perform mechanical scopes
- Background in service operations and maintenance agreements (if applicable)
- PE license or strong engineering background (nice-to-have, not required)
- Safety credentials (OSHA 30) and a track record of strong safety performance
