This is a Full-Time, Hybrid position based in either Oakland or Los Angeles, CA with a salary range of $91,000 to $114,000.

Is This Your Dream Job? The Controller will be responsible for ensuring the finance department’s day-to-day operations run smoothly; providing up-to-date financial analysis and serving as a partner to the Finance & Operations Director on bigger picture financial planning.

 

The Controller will play an instrumental role in continuing to shape the finance department infrastructure, including the framework for financial policies, procedures, and technologies.

 

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • 5+ years of Nonprofit Accounting experience with a deep understanding of GAAP
  • Experience working at a national organization
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated success in creating and executing strategic solutions to financial challenges
  • Self-directed, highly organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance- Preferred

 

How You Will Spend Your Day: 

Day-to-Day Finance Operations:

  • Lead day-to-day financial operations, including supervising financial firm’s daily functions and ensuring GAAP compliance
  • Liaise between staff, vendors, & contractors and external finance firm
  • Manage the virtual filing of all financial paperwork, ensuring staff and finance firm follow document retention policies
  • Manage timely monthly close and reconciliation activities
  • Ensure all bills and income are properly prepared and coded for the finance firm
  • Authorize transactions and deposits checks
  • Manage the effective use of financial software (Xero, Expensify, Bill.com)
  • Maintain up-to-date finance policy and procedure manuals and monitor adherence
  • Train staff (and non-staff when appropriate) on finance procedures and systems


Payroll & Benefits Administration:

  • Manage the financial firm and payroll company to run bimonthly payroll and corresponding benefits, like 401(k) payments
  • Establish PowerSwitch as a payroll entity in new states and respond to payroll tax authority communications in the states where operations occur
  • Keep current with policies relating to the taxation of salaries, benefits, and other payroll factors across all the different states where operations occur


Audit & Tax Filings

  • Lead the annual tax filings and internal & external audit process, including collecting, recording, sorting, and maintaining information and data files in electronic formats for annual audits.
  • Schedule meetings, manage checklists, and gather necessary documents


Financial Analysis

  • Support the annual and mid-year budget preparation process
  • Support the creation of grant budgets and financial reports
  • Monitor budget vs actuals, prepare monthly/quarterly financial reports, and meet with budget managers to report on progress
  • Support financial forecasts and analysis
  • Oversee the tracking of executed contracts and subgrants and ensures compliance
  • Other duties as assigned 


Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position and reports to the Finance and Operations Director. PowerSwitch Action offers a competitive starting salary between $91,000-114,000 (based on experience) and generous benefits, including:

  • Annual $2,000 flat raise on work anniversary that is not tied to performance
  • 401(k) with 5% employer contribution
  • 100% of health, dental, and vision premiums for employees and their family members (spouse/domestic partner and children)
  • Life insurance for employees
  • Flexible Spending Account: Employees may contribute up to $5,000 a year for childcare expenses and up to $2,500 a year for medical expenses (no employer contribution)
  • 12 days of vacation increasing with tenure up to 20 days
  • 12 days of sick leave per year
  • 6-week sabbatical for full-time employees after five years of employment
