Job Title: Senior Mechanical Designer / Checker (BIW Tooling Fixture)

Location: Southfield, MI

Pay Rate: $35–37/hr

Job Type: Long-term Contract

Work Schedule: Onsite – Hybrid (4 days in office, 1 day remote; subject to change based on project performance)


Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechanical Designer / Checker with a strong background in Body-in-White (BIW) tooling fixture design. The ideal candidate will be proficient in Catia and have hands-on experience with Body Shop Tooling, specifically in Framing Lines, Bodyside Systems, and Sub-Assemblies. Experience with North American auto manufacturer standards is essential.Please note this is not an engineerin or product designer role, this is a tooling mechanical designer using Siemens NX and Catia.


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in BIW tooling fixture design
  • Proficiency in NX CAD (Catia preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Body Assembly and Geometry Setting Fixtures
  • Automotive assembly strategies and part flow
  • GEO and Repot Systems
  • Experience developing detailed CAD drawings and specs for:
  • Mechanical equipment, fixtures, tools, and controls
  • Weld gun BGA, cap adaptors, and servo motors
  • Ability to modify and revise 3D/2D models and create detailed kit sheets
  • Familiarity with:
  • NAAMS standards
  • Customer standards and attributes in CAD files
  • CAD Check and model space/paper space configurations
  • Strong fixture/detail stack-up methodology understanding
  • Ability to coordinate with project engineers, technical leaders, and vendors
  • Competence in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)


Preferred Skills:

  • Understanding of mechanical design sequences and control documentation
  • Ability to describe operation and maintenance of mechanical systems
  • Proficiency in interpreting and producing blueprints, drawings, and models
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Willingness to travel domestically (5–20%) and internationally as needed


Education & Experience:

  • 5+ years of mechanical design and engineering experience in BIW
  • Associate degree in Mechanical Technology or equivalent experience
