Position Overview
A leading regional lumberyard is seeking an experienced Engineered Wood Products (EWP) Designer to support our growing residential and light commercial business. This role is responsible for designing floor systems and structural framing packages using engineered wood components including I-joists, LVL, LSL, and other structural composite lumber products.
The ideal candidate understands structural load paths, reads plans fluently, and thrives in a fast-paced environment where accuracy, communication, and turnaround time matter.
Key Responsibilities
- Design floor systems and structural framing layouts using I-joists, LVL, LSL, and rim board
- Review architectural and structural plans to ensure accurate load interpretation
- Produce clear layout drawings, placement diagrams, and material take-offs
- Coordinate directly with sales reps, contractors, builders, and field personnel
- Optimize designs for cost efficiency and structural integrity
- Ensure designs comply with manufacturer specs, local codes, and engineering standards
- Provide technical support to internal teams and customers
- Manage revisions and respond quickly to plan changes
Qualifications
- 2+ years of EWP design experience (floor systems required)
- Proficiency in design software such as MiTek, Weyerhaeuser Forte, Simpson, or equivalent
- Strong understanding of structural framing principles and load calculations
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings
- Knowledge of residential construction methods
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Strong communication skills — able to work closely with sales and field teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within a lumberyard or component manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with major EWP suppliers (Weyerhaeuser, Boise Cascade, LP, etc.)
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Field framing experience is a plus
