The Plumbing Design Engineer is responsible for the design, coordination, and documentation of plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, industrial, and residential projects. This role works closely with mechanical, electrical, fire protection, architectural, and structural teams to deliver code-compliant, constructible plumbing designs from concept through construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Design plumbing systems including:
- Domestic water (hot & cold)
- Sanitary and vent systems
- Storm drainage
- Natural gas and medical gas (where applicable)
- Prepare plumbing layouts, riser diagrams, and details using Revit and/or AutoCAD
- Perform engineering calculations (pipe sizing, fixture units, water heaters, pumps, etc.)
- Coordinate designs with:
- Mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineers
- Architects, structural engineers, and civil teams
- Ensure designs comply with:
- International Plumbing Code (IPC)
- Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC)
- Local and state building codes
- Support permitting and respond to plan review comments
- Participate in construction administration:
- RFIs
- Submittal reviews
- Field coordination and site visits (as needed)
- Assist with project scheduling, workload forecasting, and junior staff mentoring (mid-level and senior roles)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing Engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of plumbing design experience in an MEP consulting environment
- Proficiency with Revit MEP and/or AutoCAD
- Working knowledge of IPC, UPC, and local plumbing codes
- Strong communication and coordination skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- PE license or EIT on PE track
- Healthcare, laboratory, or mission-critical project experience
- Medical gas certification (NFPA 99)
- LEED project experience
- Familiarity with Bluebeam, Navisworks, or BIM coordination tools
