Role Overview

Shield AI is redefining autonomous aviation with cutting-edge AI and GPS/RF-denied navigation technologies. We’re building a next-generation aircraft designed to push the limits of performance, survivability, and autonomy.

We’re seeking a Staff Electromechanical Engineer to lead the design and integration of advanced avionics systems—from whiteboard to flight test. This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in fast-moving environments, owns their designs end-to-end, and enjoys working shoulder-to-shoulder with electrical, systems, and manufacturing teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design complex electromechanical solutions for avionics packaging, electrical interconnects, thermal management, and aircraft integration
  • Perform structural, preliminary thermal, and modal analyses to ensure avionics survivability in harsh operating environments
  • Ensure compliance with performance, safety, environmental, and EMI/EMC standards, including:
  • DO-160, DO-254, DO-178C
  • MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461
  • Own designs from concept through design reviews, system validation, failure analysis, and flight-test readiness
  • Partner closely with electrical engineers to define PCB constraints, mechanical interfaces, and circuit card integration
  • Support manufacturing, integration, and supplier engagement as designs transition to production

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience designing mechanical and electromechanical systems for aerospace applications
  • Hands-on experience with:
  • Avionics packaging and harness integration
  • Mechanical component design and system layout
  • Advanced CAD proficiency (NX, SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar)
  • Familiarity with:
  • eCAD tools (Altium, Cadence, Allegro)
  • Harness design software (Capital, Zuken)
  • Working knowledge of PCB layout processes and advanced manufacturing methods
  • Experience with FEA, thermal analysis, and fatigue/lifecycle testing
  • Comfortable operating in fast-paced, agile development environments with evolving priorities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with UAVs, aircraft, or robotic electromechanical systems
  • Exposure to environmental and dynamic electronics testing (vibration, thermal cycling, fatigue)
  • Experience working directly with fabrication shops, contract manufacturers, and suppliers
  • Background in startup, R&D, or defense innovation environments
  • Active or eligibility for a U.S. Secret Security Clearance
