Position Summary:
The Outpatient Orthopedic Hand Therapist provides specialized rehabilitation services to patients with upper extremity injuries or conditions, focusing on the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Working within an occupational medicine framework, the therapist designs and implements individualized treatment plans to restore function, improve mobility, and facilitate return to work. This role collaborates closely with physicians, case managers, and employers to ensure optimal functional outcomes and safe workplace reintegration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and treat patients with orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions of the upper extremity (e.g., fractures, tendon injuries, arthritis, post-surgical recovery).
- Develop and implement customized therapy plans using evidence-based techniques, including manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and modalities.
- Fabricate custom splints and orthotic devices as needed.
- Perform Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) and work conditioning programs when appropriate.
- Educate patients on injury prevention, self-management, and post-discharge exercises.
- Document patient progress in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with referring physicians, occupational health providers, and case managers to coordinate care and facilitate return-to-work plans.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable HIPAA, safety, and infection control policies.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) or Physical Therapist (PT) in state of practice
- Certification in Hand Therapy (CHT) or working toward certification
- Experience in orthopedic and/or hand therapy
- Knowledge of occupational medicine principles and return-to-work protocols
Preferred:
- 2+ years of outpatient clinical experience
- Experience with workers' compensation case management
- Proficiency in custom splinting and post-operative protocols
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong clinical reasoning and manual therapy skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and within interdisciplinary teams
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
- Sensitivity to occupational demands and ergonomic considerations
