Principal Structural Project Engineer - Power

Our client is a renowned Engineering Consultancy with over 1000 employees and offices spread throughout the UK and Europe. A multi-award-winning organisation known for creating safe and sustainable design solutions within aviation, defence, life sciences and industry, nuclear, power, public, and rail sectors. This team in Manchester had a dedicated Civil and Structural power team following the growth of this sector. This is a standalone team working power projects alongside the Civil and Structural team.

Due to the growth of this area of the business the Team are now looking to appoint several Principal Project Engineers.

The Principal Engineer will carry out some design work, but also focus on managing the project. This typically involves cost management, resource management, client liaison, delivery management.

This person will work on Power projects – for example – a current project underway, is a subsea cable between France and England for example – this team will be responsible for designing the converter station on the UK. More civil focused really but need to have an overall understanding of how all disciplines pull in together to ensure successful delivery.

Things they may work on (C&S will focus on foundations, building, bunding for equipment, roads, fencing – basically the whole site relating to the Power project) sites such as:

-         Transition stations

-         Substations buildings

-         Power stations

This person will, in addition to overseeing the above-mentioned functions for C&S, will also ensure that the likes of the following is managed accordingly:

-         Cost

-         Resourcing

-         Program management

-         Client liaison

-         Interdisciplinary coordination

-         Quality of output

Day to day duties:

-         Client and internal meetings to discuss project requirements and updates

-         Design reviews

-         Checking quality

-         Potential site visits

-         Advising and coordinating the design of younger members of the team

Occasional site visits may be required, and this could be anywhere in the UK.

This person may or may not be doing actual design – depending on the project and its size – its likely they will be involved with both doing design and leading the project.

This person doesn’t have to come from a Power specific background, however they would need to have some interest in growing their skillset in this, should they be submitted.

The ideal Candidate will meet the following criteria,

-         Degree qualified Civil or Structural

-         Must be chartered or working towards chartership

-         Experience in managing project delivery

-         Technically competent in Infrastructure design and co-ordination.

-         Exceptional communication skills both written and oral.
